Job Title: Engineering Manager – Distillery Operations & Commissioning
Supervisor: Head of Distillery Operations (Japan)
Location: Chitose, Hokkaido, Japan
Position Type: Full-Time (on-site)
Language: Fluent Japanese required; working proficiency in English necessary
About Us
We are building a large-scale, highly automated distillery in Chitose, Japan, dedicated to world-class spirit production. The facility encompasses grain handling, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, utilities, wastewater treatment, and warehousing, supported by automated process control systems.
We are looking for an experienced engineering professional to lead the final construction and commissioning phase of this new build, then transition into a long-term operational engineering leadership role. This is a rare opportunity to help launch a world-class distillery from the ground up and grow into a lasting leadership position as the operation matures. We are a company that promotes from within and invests in our people's growth.
Summary
This role has two phases. During construction and commissioning, the Engineering Manager will support mechanical completion, vendor and contractor coordination, site engineering oversight, and start-up of process and utility systems. Once the plant is operational, the role shifts into ongoing leadership of engineering, maintenance, and reliability for the site.
A separate Controls & IT Engineer will own automation systems, programming, and major automation troubleshooting. This role will need to work comfortably alongside that function and understand the automation environment, but automation is not a primary responsibility here.
We're looking for someone highly motivated and hands-on: comfortable rolling up their sleeves in a complex, fast-moving project environment, eager to learn, and excited to grow with the company long-term.
Responsibilities
Construction & Commissioning Phase
- Support installation and commissioning of process equipment.
- Coordinate with EPC contractors, equipment vendors, and Japanese regulatory authorities.
- Review P&IDs, layouts, commissioning documentation, and operating procedures.
- Support commissioning of distillation, steam and condensate, CIP, grain handling, wastewater treatment, and HVAC/utility systems.
- Liaise with the Controls & IT Engineer on process automation and PLC systems as needed.
Operational Engineering Phase
- Lead engineering and maintenance activities across the distillery.
- Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including the CMMS.
- Implement and maintain the spare parts strategy.
- Ensure compliance with Japanese safety and environmental regulations.
- Drive continuous improvement, energy optimization, and OEE gains.
- Plan and manage shutdowns and contractor activities.
- Maintain engineering documentation and change management processes.
- Support CapEx planning and engineering team development.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Help build out the site's operations and maintenance teams, including hiring, onboarding, and training as the distillery ramps up.
- Establish team structures, roles, and workflows for operations and maintenance.
- Manage and develop the operations and maintenance teams on an ongoing basis, including performance management and career growth.
- Oversee day-to-day operations and maintenance activities across the site, ensuring alignment with production, safety, and reliability goals.
- Foster a strong safety culture and a collaborative, hands-on working environment across the teams.
Required Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Process Engineering.
- Experience in large industrial or process manufacturing facilities.
- Experience with commissioning and start-up activities.
- Working knowledge of automated industrial systems (not required to program or troubleshoot at a controls-engineer level).
- Experience managing contractors and vendors.
- Knowledge of maintenance systems and reliability engineering.
- Strong safety culture and understanding of industrial risk management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Distillery, brewing, food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or chemical plant experience.
- Familiarity with PLC/SCADA/DCS environments.
- Steam, utilities, and process plant knowledge.
- Understanding of hazardous area requirements.
- Wastewater treatment experience.
- Exposure to Total Productive Maintenance, Lean, or continuous improvement practices.
Personal Attributes
- Practical, hands-on approach.
- Calm under operational pressure.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Able to lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Comfortable working across both construction and operational environments.
- Highly motivated, eager to learn, and solutions-focused.
